How to clean your hair brush

How to clean your hair brush!! Or maybe it’s time for a new hair brush? It might seem like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t clean their brush!  Your hair brush could be responsible for the lack of shine and build up on your hair and scalp. Why take the time to wash and clean your hair and scalp if you’re going to use a dirty tool on it? It’s normal for your brush to collect lint and dust. When our hair is oily it collects that stuff like a magnet! Make it a habit this year to clean your hair brush daily, and deep clean it weekly or at least bi-weekly! Here’s how-

-Ideally pull out the hairs with your hand after each use. This will prevent lent from getting trapped in those little bristles. The less hair caught in the brush the easier it will be to scrub the surface of the brush. Can’t get to all the hair stuck? Use a rat tail comb to help you remove the stubborn hair. At the salon we have a tool that helps remove the hair, you can order one on amazon.

Next soak your brush in HOT water and a mix of either clarifying shampoo or regular shampoo. Add a splash of baking soda to remove extra oil if needed.

Let it soak for a few minutes and then take a toothbrush and scrub!!! Rinse and let it dry. Another tip is to have your own personal hair brush! Don’t share with the rest of your household. A hairbrush is personal- think about if you brushed your clean hair with someone else’s oily or dry scalp residue on the same brush. Kinda gross :( Also men tend to brush their hair with product in it! Not so great if you just washed that hair of yours- just a thought.

What do I brush my hair with? Well the HOLY GRAIL of hair brushes is of course the Mason Pearson (which is available at Costco right now in the high end section). A boar bristle is nice because it’s gentle not the hair, distributes oils down the hair shaft to prevent excess oily scalp, and is a backstage ESSENTIAL for stylist styling hair. You can brush through your curling iron set with it to give it some extra volume and shine. Here is a more budget friendly version of the mason.

The wet brush. It’s amazing. Something about how the bristles are so flexible when detangling you’ll wonder what life was like before it. Consider it a necessity. They’re so budget friendly you and every member of you family can hair their own!  Available at target or amazon for less than $10.

Brushing your hair when wet could be damaging! Keep in mind our hair is the most fragile when wet. So help keep your length and brush gently from the ENDS up, section by section.

Brushing your hair also helps with hair growth! How? It improves circulation- getting all that blood flowing to your scalp will help with new growth!

Now hopefully you’ll be a little more conscious about your hair brush!
